Melbourne jocks go toe-to-toe in Premiership

Melbourne Jockey Premiership

As we head towards the rough end of horse racing, now that all the big boys and girls have had their runs, keep an eye on the jockeys in Victoria.

The Melbourne Metro jockey premiership currently sees 19-year-old Beau Mertens going toe-to-toe with 40-year-old Craig Williams.

Beau is the son of Group 1-winning jockey Peter and is quickly reducing his claim as his star rises towards senior jockey status.

Craig Williams has pretty much raced the world over and is a two-time winner of the Caulfield Cup, the Cox Plate and the Golden Slipper. He just needs a Melbourne Cup win for a full house.

It’s a proper old guard versus the new guard ding-dong going on.

On Saturday these two great hoops went at it at Moonee Valley when Williams took out the first race then the pair traded blow-for-blow wins over the next four races.

As it stands after the weekend’s racing Beau is ahead by only one win, 61-60.
